GARY | Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson joined representatives from the Urban League of NWI, Former Mayor Richard M. Daley’s Office, the University of Chicago, and True Partners Consulting to discuss returning potentially millions of dollars to the citizens of Gary through the Earned Income Tax Credit.
By applying for the EITC, households with three or more children earning less than $50,270 can receive up to $5,891 in refunds. Households with fewer children and individuals can also claim refunds based on income limits.
The City of Gary will be partnering with the Urban League of NWI to assist residents in claiming money that is rightfully theirs.
In addition to the tax assistance that the Urban League of NWI will provide at their office at 3101 Broadway in Gary, two “Super Saturdays” have been scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon Feb. 9 and 16 at the Genesis Convention Center in Gary.
“This is an opportunity for Gary residents who work during the week to make an appointment and come have their taxes prepared on a Saturday,” said Freeman-Wilson.
Students from the University of Chicago will assist at the Super Saturdays by serving as greeters and checking residents in for the tax preparation sessions. Gary residents who meet the income requirements should call the Urban League at (219) 980-2093 to make an appointment to have their taxes prepared and get a lust of items to bring to the appointment. Only those who have made an appointment will be accommodated during the Super Saturdays.
“During these hard financial times, it’s important that our citizens are made aware of the dollars that belong to them,” said Mayor Freeman-Wilson. “We also hope that those we get sizable returns will opt to shop in Gary and give the economy a boost.”
The Urban League of NWI is looking for volunteers to help with tax preparation. A training session will be held at the Urban League office at noon Saturday. Call (219) 980-2093 for more details.
