City remembers trailblazing public servant, educator Katie Hall
GARY | Yesterday, the Honorable former United States Congresswoman (D-IN) Katie Hall passed away.
Wife, mother, sister, aunt and a friend to countless others, Hall made significant contributions to humanity as a history making civic leader. She served as an Indiana State Senator, an Indiana State Representative and Gary City Clerk. Education was also a great part of her career having taught in the Gary Community School Corporation for nearly 35 years.
Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson noted that Hall will always be remembered for her tireless dedication and service to the City of Gary, the State of Indiana and her work in authoring and sponsoring the bill that resulted in a national holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
"I extend my deepest condolences to the family of congresswoman Katie Hall. She was a great friend of our family, a phenomenal educator, author of the King holiday bill and a political trailblazer whom we will never forget," said Freeman-Wilson.
Hall was born in Mound Bayou, MS and was a long-time devoted member of the Van Buren Missionary Baptist Church in Gary.
Congresswoman Katie Hall's body will lie in state for public viewing on Fri., Feb. 24 at Van Buren Baptist Church, 2585 Van Buren Street from 12:00p.m. - 5:00p.m. There will be a musical tribute performed by the Van Buren Baptist Church Choir from 5:00p.m.- 6:00p.m. followed by a tribute by Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, Inc. from 6:00p.m. - 7:00p.m. A musical interlude and fellowship will then take place until 8:00 p.m.
