CROWN POINT | A Calumet Township man whose murder trial was set to begin Monday instead will be evaluated for his competency to stand trial.
George Knezevic, 61, who had been free on bond, was ordered taken into custody Thursday after a hearing, and his trial was reset for Oct. 7.
In the interim, court records show the defense is seeking a competency determination. Knezevic has twice rejected generous plea deals, opting for trial. A hearing on the matter was set for Aug. 23.
Knezevic is accused of choking his 94-year-old mother in October 2010, spraying her with a garden hose and pulling her into the home they shared in the 4700 block of Buchanan Street. The woman was found bruised and unable to speak in the trash-filled home, court records state.
Ljubica Knezevic died three days later at Methodist Hospitals Southlake Campus in Merrillville.
