GARY | A 70-year-old Gary man was drunk when he crashed his car into a Gary squad car late Tuesday, officials said.
According to the Lake County Sheriff's Department, which processed the accident scene, at 11:05 p.m. Tuesday, Hermie Stewart, of Gary, was driving a 1998 Honda Civic east on 21st Avenue when he turned in front of a Gary police vehicle, striking it.
A Lake County officer at the scene said he could smell alcohol on Stewart and administered a portable breath test, which showed Stewart had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.14. A person is drunk under the law when their blood alcohol concentration is 0.08 or above.
Crews took Stewart to The Methodist Hospitals' Northlake Campus in Gary where a blood test showed his blood alcohol concentration to be 0.19, more than two times the legal limit, police said.
Lake County police are seeking charges with the Lake County prosecutor's office against Stewart of operating while intoxicated causing injury, operating with a controlled substance and failure to yield improper turning.
