GARY | A 5-month-old Gary baby died at a Chicago hospital Friday morning after suffering head injuries in a case of alleged abuse, police said.

Syrus Morgan, of the 4700 block of East 10th Avenue, was pronounced dead about 9 a.m. at the University of Chicago Medicine Comer Children's Hospital, Gary police Lt. Delmar Stout said.

A spokesman for the Cook County medical examiner's office said a autopsy to determine the manner and cause of death is scheduled for Saturday.

Stout said police were called Tuesday night to the Methodist Hospitals' Northlake Campus in Gary after the child came to the emergency room with multiple skull fractures, blood on the brain and broken ribs.

Police took the child's 19-year-old mother and her 27-year-old boyfriend into custody after Methodist staff determined his injuries were caused by abuse, Stout said.

Morgan was transferred to the Chicago hospital via medical helicopter.

Stout said the baby's mother and her boyfriend were released from police custody.

The case remains under investigation.
