GARY | A 20-year-old woman and a 36-year-old man were wounded Monday night when shots were fired at the car they were in, police said.

The shooting occurred about 8:56 p.m. along Clay Street, police said.

The couple were riding in the southbound lane when they heard a loud banging sound. They looked and noticed the back window was shattered.

The man said he felt something hit him and noticed his female companion was bleeding, police said. He then drove to a hospital for treatment.

The man suffered a gunshot wound to the back, and the woman's head was grazed by a bullet, said Gary police spokeswoman Cpl. Gabrielle King.

Anyone with information is asked to call police Cpl. James Nielsen at (219) 881-4754.
