GARY | A chemical spill caused road closures early Wednesday near the intersection of Cline Avenue and Michigan Street, officials said.
A semitrailer rolled over about 6:30 a.m. near the Gary/Hammond border, spilling 400 gallons of sodium hydroxide, Gary Fire Department Chief of Operations Mark Jones said.
Crews from the Gary Fire Department and Lake County hazmat team cleaned up the spill by 9:30 a.m. and reopened Cline Avenue. The eastbound lanes of Michigan Street were reopened later Wednesday.
An investigation into the cause of the spill is ongoing, a spokesman with trucking company Con-Way Freight said.
Sodium hydroxide can be toxic if inhaled and is a corrosive that can cause skin irritation, Jones said.
