GARY | A garage was destroyed and three nearby houses sustained heat damage from a fire Friday at 1408 Aetna St.
The Gary Fire Department was called about 1:30 p.m. and firefighters found the detached garage fully engulfed, Fire Investigator Stephen Johnson said. Two cars, a pickup truck, a motorcycle, a dirt bike, a lawn tractor and other equipment inside the garage were destroyed by the blaze.
Residents reported hearing an explosion before the fire, but Johnson said the sound might have been caused by exploding tires or gasoline.
Motorists reported seeing thick, black smoke near 15th Street and Interstate 65 from the Indiana Toll Road. Johnson said the fire was out by 2:30 p.m. The fire caused heat damage at the home at that address and homes on either side of the garage, he said.
No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire remained undetermined Friday. Johnson said he would be working with fire investigators and the insurance company to find the cause. The homeowner reported the fire.
