PORTAGE TOWNSHIP | A man who had stopped with a church group Friday afternoon at the local Subway restaurant was taken into custody as a suspect to a double homicide in Gary.
The man attempted to flee his group when he overheard a telephone call concerning police, according to the county police report.
The pastor of the Good Samaritan Mission in Gary was contacted by Gary police about the man, who had been staying with the group, police said. Arrangements were made for police to stop the church van as it returned to Gary.
When the pastor called the van driver to inform him of the plan, the man reportedly overheard it on the phone speaker and fled the group, police said. The pastor reportedly told the driver no more than that police would be contacting him about a situation.
Porter County police found the man jogging northbound on Ind. 149 and talking on a cellphone in the area of County Road 875 North. He reportedly surrendered without incident.
