GARY | Join the celebration of Earth Day and National Park Week at the annual Green Gary and Junior Ranger Day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore’s Douglas Center, 100 N. Lake St. in the Miller neighborhood.
Presented with the Gary Parks Department, there are activities at both Douglas Center and Marquette Park.
At Douglas Center, enjoy the new Nature Play Zone, where youth of all ages can investigate the outdoors safely. Families can get a free nature exploration backpack, while supplies last, by using the play zone.
Join a ranger for a hike on the new section of the Miller Woods trail to Lake Michigan, explore activity booths hosted by nature and civic organizations, read about nature in the Gary Public Library bookmobile, and learn about Green Urbanism.
At Marquette Park, activities kick off at 10:15 a.m. with a special hike led by Marci Crozier, who appeared on TV's "Biggest Loser." Visitors can also kayak in the lagoon, fly a kite, join an Adopt-A-Beach Clean-up, and learn about park renovations.
