GARY | Gary police are investigating the city's 42nd homicide of the year.
Officers were called at 8:07 p.m. Wednesday to a call of a man down on a street corner on the west side of 4200 Vermont Street.
Marlon Allen, 41, of the 4700 block of Larkspur St. in East Chicago was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Lake County Coroner's office.
The cause of death was listed as multiple gunshot wounds to the body and head suffered in an apparent homicide.
Gary has been plagued with a rash of homicides this year. In 2012, the city recorded 43 homicides.
Law enforcement officials have said the majority of the murders are retaliatory and are being carried out by small, start-up gangs.
A regional team of officers from Hammond, Gary, East Chicago and Lake County are working to curb the violence in northern Lake County.
Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson also asked Gov. Mike Pence to send Indiana State Police to assist with patrols in the city.
Pence rejected the request for troopers, citing a host of internal problems in the Gary Police Department needing to be resolved. The state instead is offering assistance with training, evidence processing and technology upgrades.
