GARY | Chuck Hughes beamed when he had the chance to discuss the 1955 Indiana state high school basketball championship game.
The game between Gary Roosevelt and Indianapolis Crispus Attucks featured the country's first two all-black high school teams competing for a state championship, he said.
Hughes, executive director of the Gary Chamber of Commerce, announced Wednesday the 2013 CN Lakeshore Classic is scheduled for Nov. 29 and 30 in Gary to commemorate the game, which was won by Attucks.
Players from both teams will attend the classic. Among them will be NBA Hall of Famer Oscar "Big O" Robertson and Dick Barnett, a NBA All Star and two-time world champion.
Robertson played for Attucks during the 1955 game, and Barnett was on the Gary Roosevelt team.
The classic will feature a luncheon and reunion reception Nov. 29.
Events scheduled for Nov. 30 include a program honoring the 1955 teams at the Genesis Convention Center.
Benny Dorsey, a 1954 Gary Roosevelt graduate, recalled both teams as having good chemistry and discipline.
"Everybody was just in awe with what took place" during the championship game, Dorsey said.
His only wish is that the score was different, he said.
Following the Nov. 30 program honoring the 1955 teams, the 2013-14 Gary Roosevelt and Attucks basketball teams will take the court.
Other basketball games also are scheduled that day.
Hughes said Canadian National Railway Co. is the "signature sponsor" of the classic. He continues to seek other sponsors, vendors and volunteers for the event.
