GARY | A fire that started in piled lumber and debris in a garage in Gary just after 9 p.m. Saturday quickly spread to two houses.
A house at 1260 W. 17th Ave., directly in front of the garage, was the first to catch fire, according to Gary firefighters. The fire then spread to a house next door. Neither house appeared to be occupied.
It took Gary firefighters about 30 minutes to bring the fires under control. They remained on the scene putting out hot spots and mopping up for about one hour more.
The rear of the house at 1260 W. 17th Ave. was badly burned and the fire spread to the second floor, firefighters said. The first and second floors of the house next door also were heavily damaged by the fire.
