INDIANAPOLIS | The former extracurricular treasurer at Gary's Banneker school may be forced to repay $470.15 she collected for school activities that allegedly never made it to the bank.
The State Board of Accounts on Tuesday demanded Patricia Franklin reimburse Banneker Honors Achievement Center the money needed to balance the school's books.
According to a state audit, Franklin's deposits of school receipts went from being perfect in January 2012, to a few cents off in February and March, to $443.15 short in May. Franklin was replaced in September 2012.
Under Indiana law, government employees who handle cash can be held personally liable for missing funds.
Franklin did not submit a formal response to the audit or the demand for repayment.
Principal Sarah Givens said the current Banneker treasurer, Janice Barnett, has been trained in proper cash handling procedures "so that occurrences such as this one not occur again."
State auditors forwarded their report to the Lake County prosecutor for possible criminal investigation and the Indiana attorney general for civil collection of the missing money.
