GARY | The first 300 students who attend the back-to-school jamboree Saturday at Indiana University Northwest will receive free school supplies.

"For several years we've offered school supplies for students who arrive early at the back-to-school jamboree," said State Rep. Vernon Smith, D-Gary. "Many families find it a blessing to receive these items, which are donated by our generous sponsors, because the cost of school supplies can be significant."

The jamboree runs from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a variety of events, including a three-on-three basketball tournament.

If a team completes a registration form and give it to Smith before the event, the cost is $30 per team. If the team waits until Saturday, the cost goes to $45.

Other events include finger painting, a drawing contest and face painting, a Double Dutch jump rope contest, video game tournament and dance competition, as well as a film festival from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and a disc jockey from noon to 5 p.m.

Tickets are available by calling (219) 887-2046 or by stopping by Beautiful Things, 3570 Village Court in Gary.
