GARY | Calumet Township Trustee Mary Elgin on Thursday handed over the keys of three ambulances from the township's retired fleet to Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson.
Elgin said the township no longer needed the 1997, 2003 and 2005 Ford Econoline ambulances, valued at about $30,000. The township disbanded its in-house emergency medical services unit about a year ago.
Prompt Ambulance Service now provides that service for residents of the township's unincorporated area, which is bounded by Gary, Griffith and Merrillville.
Elgin said during a Thursday ceremony that the donation was not just a handout. In return for the ambulances — and three cars the township gave to Gary earlier this year, the city has committed to renovating parking lots at the township’s main office downtown.
