GARY | The city's animal control division announced Wednesday that the Human Society Calumet Area, Inc., will help the division perform some of its services starting next week.

The Gary Animal Control will pay the Humane Society $50 per animal per month for its services, according to a news release from the city. The city will transport the animals to the shelter located at 421 45th Street in Munster until December 31, 2014.

According to the release, feral cats are exempt from the $50 fee. The contract between the two organizations has an annual budget of $82,000 and could be extended beyond 2014.

Residents who have an animal impounded will face a $15 fee each day, but the fee will be waived if the animal has been impounded for less than three days.

The change comes after a summer online petition that called for the Gary Animal Control to shut down. The petition prompted the city to release an outline of changes the division intended to make.
