GARY | The City Council on Tuesday approved three ordinances relating to small business owners and those who work from home.
Each ordinance correlates to the already existing zoning codes for Gary. Director of Zoning Joseph VanDyke said these codes have not been updated since 1982.
An amendment to the first ordinance brings codes up to date and allows more opportunity for small businesses and home-based businesses, officials said.
A change to the second ordinance will make it easier for businesses to open in Gary, official said.
The final ordinance changed the fees for general business licenses.
For a new business owner, a general business license is $125. The annual renewal is $75 and is now cyclical from the date of purchase, instead of each December.
The penalty for a delinquent license is $25. Late fees for delinquent licenses are $25 for 31 to 60 days, $35 for 61 to 90 days, $50 for more than 90 days and $40 for each prior year up to three years.
A special event vendor license also was created for any small business owner who wants to participate in public events such as parades and the air and water show. The fee for the license is $60.
