GARY | Police are investigating the circumstances involved in a house fire that claimed the life of a 73-year-old woman Monday evening.

According to reports, officers were called to a home in the 2400 block of Buchanan Street at approximately 6:46 p.m. in response to a fire. Upon arriving, officers were informed someone was possibly still inside the building.

Police said officers assisted firefighters in gaining entry to the home, where they discovered the woman. Police said the woman was removed from the home and immediately transported to an area emergency room for treatment of her injuries, but died shortly afterward.

A cause of death has year to be determined, according to police.
