GARY | Gary police suspect a car that officers found on fire Monday afternoon was involved in a shooting earlier that day, police said.
A 24-year-old Gary man was walking south in the 700 block of Hamlin Street smoking a cigarette about 11:15 a.m. Monday when a gray Chevrolet with tinted windows pulled up alongside him, police Cpl. Gabrielle King said. The man "made a gesture waving at the vehicle," King said.
When the people in the vehicle opened fire on him, the man pulled out his gun and fired back, King said. He was shot and taken to the emergency room for treatment. There is no word yet on possible charges, King said.
Two houses on the block also were damaged by gunfire. Several shell casings were recovered from the scene, King said.
An officer located the car fire about 12:20 p.m. after seeing heavy smoke coming from the 800 block of Mount Street. Police believe the burned car to be the suspects' vehicle, King said.
Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Cpl. Mike Barnes at (219) 881-7434.
