INDIANAPOLIS | A Gary state lawmaker and education expert has been selected to help shape education policy throughout the Midwest.
The Council of State Governments this month chose state Rep. Vernon Smith, D-Gary, who is also a professor of education at Indiana University Northwest in Gary, to serve on its Midwest Legislative Conference Education Committee.
The committee is set to review and make policy recommendations concerning school funding, education reform, teacher training, college affordability and other education issues facing Indiana, Illinois and neighboring states.
"It's important to have these discussions not only within our own House, but in Midwestern and national contexts as well," Smith said. "I look forward to hearing new ideas on education issues, as well as sharing my own ideas with other legislators."
