CROWN POINT | A Gary man pleaded guilty Tuesday to voluntary manslaughter in a fatal shooting and to criminal recklessness in a subsequent incident.
The plea deal reached with prosecutors calls for William Key III, 22, to serve a total sentence of 30 years in prison.
According to the plea agreement, Key admitted to firing a handgun on Dec. 12, 2010, in the 4800 block of Maryland Place in Gary. The confrontation resulted in the wounding of a victim identified as Anthony Blair and the death of another, identified as Vincent Wren Jr.
In exchange for Key's guilty plea, the state dropped multiple charges in the incident, including murder.
The agreement calls for a total sentence of 29 years in the fatal shooting.
Key also admitted to leaving the scene of the shooting and — while still armed — going to the home of another man in the 4800 block of Delaware Street in Gary, where he asked to be let in.
When the man refused Key entry, Key admitted to walking into the man's yard and firing his handgun at the man.
Still armed, Key then proceeded to the 400 block of East 48th Place, also in Gary, where he encountered a man driving a car, authorities said. When the man refused Key's demands to enter the car, Key again fired his handgun.
Key agreed to serve an additional year in prison for criminal recklessness in the two additional shootings, for a total 30-year sentence.
Sentencing is set for Sept. 23.
