CROWN POINT | Prosecutors on Tuesday charged a Gary man in a fatal shooting earlier this month on an entrance ramp to Interstate 80/94.
Rickey Smith, 29, is charged with murder in Sept. 13 slaying of 43-year-old Tyron Hopkins.
Police were told vehicles belonging to Smith and Hopkins were observed traveling south on Grant Street to the I-80/94 ramp.
Hopkins was seen pulling his vehicle to the side as Smith passed Hopkins to the left. Smith fired at Hopkins through the passenger window of his car, striking Hopkins in the head, court records state.
Hopkins was taken to Methodist Hospitals Northlake Campus in Gary, where he was pronounced dead.
Police were told Smith had been in a conflict with a brother of Hopkins for some time, court records state.
