GARY | A 36-year-old Gary man has been charged with severely beating a paralyzed man while the victim slept.
Lake County court documents show David Earl Redmond was charged March 1 with battery resulting in serious injury to an endangered adult.
Prosecutors said the incident occurred at the victim’s home in the 900 block of West 24th Avenue on the night of March 1. According to reports, the victim was sleeping when he was awakened by Redmond, who began punching him in the head, causing the victim to lose consciousness.
The victim told police he woke up some time later to find Redmond, who is the stepfather of his girlfriend, had left.
The victim went to Methodist Hospital Northlake Campus, where it was discovered he had suffered a facial fracture under his left eye.
The victim’s girlfriend reportedly said she and the victim had been arguing earlier that day, and she had called her mother to discuss the matter when Redmond arrived a short time later at the home she shares with the victim.
She said Redmond repeatedly punched the victim and began choking him until she was able to pull him off, at which time he left.
