CROWN POINT | The Lake County prosecutor's office has charged a 20-year-old Gary man with a homicide last week that may stem from an argument last summer.
Jesse J. King is named in charges of murder and criminal recklessness filed this week in Lake Criminal Court.
Gary police allege the victim, Trammel Harper, and his girlfriend were walking in the 2100 block of Georgia Street in Gary's Midtown section Dec. 27 when they came under fire by King, who was in a tan Trailblazer that had driven up to them.
The girlfriend said Harper, 24, of Gary, previously told her "he had gotten into it" with King last summer. She said Harper told her to run, pulled out a gun and began shooting back at King.
The girlfriend said she tried to run into a nearby house for shelter, "but the door was slammed in her face." She said she then saw Harper lying on the ground.
Police were called to the scene about 8:40 p.m. and found Harper dead of gunshot wounds to the chest.
