CROWN POINT | A Gary man who escaped police and was found hiding in a closet Tuesday was charged Thursday.
Garrick Thomas was charged with Class C felony escape, Class D felony theft and possession of marijuana as a Class A misdemeanor, court records state.
Thomas, 24, crawled to the front of a police car after being handcuffed and placed in the back while being arrested, police said.
Police were called Tuesday morning to the 800 block of North Wells Street for a call of shots fired in the Miller Village Apartments complex. When officers arrived, witnesses identified Thomas as the one who fired at another individual.
Thomas admitted to police he fired a gun because he was “scared for his life” because somebody was shooting at him, according to a probable cause affidavit.
He was placed in handcuffs and put into the back of a squad car as police searched the area for any other suspects, police said.
Investigators believe he crawled from the backseat of the police car to the front seat and was able to exit the car from there, the release states.
Police received a tip Thomas was hiding in another apartment in the area. He was found inside a closet, police said.
