GARY | A Gary man died after being shot by another driver late Thursday on a Grant Street ramp to the Borman Expressway.

Tyron Hopkins, 43, was pronounced dead about 12:14 a.m. Friday at the Methodist Hospitals Northlake Campus in Gary, according to the Lake County coroner's office. The coroner's report says Hopkins lived on Van Buren Street, but does not list a specific address.

Hopkins' cause of death was listed as a gunshot wound to the head suffered in an apparent homicide.

Hopkins was driving a 1995 Ford Escort on the southbound Grant Street ramp to eastbound Interstate 94 about 10:40 p.m. Thursday when another driver pulled up alongside him, fired a weapon and fled, according to Indiana State Police.

Rickey Smith, 29, of Gary, is a person of interest in the case, police said Friday.

Anyone with information about the shooting or Rickey Smith is asked to contact Detective Brian Kubiak at (219) 696-6242.
