GARY | A 23-year-old Gary man died of a gunshot wound to the back Friday night, according to the Lake County coroner's office.

Andre Pullen, of the 3400 block of West 21st Avenue, was shot in the 1500 block of Chase Street, the coroner's office said. Pullen was pronounced dead at 11:10 p.m.

Pullen's death marks the 32nd homicide in Gary so far this year. The string of gun violence plaguing the city has prompted Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson to ask Gov. Mike Pence to approve sending Indiana State Police troopers to help police the city for 90 days.

The governor's office is reviewing that request, and other local police departments have agreed to pool their resources to help stem the violence.

Additionally, the Gary Public Safety Committee will meet at 5 p.m. Wednesday at City Hall to discuss the surge in violent crime.

Gary detectives on Saturday were investigating Pullen's slaying but had not identified any suspects, police said.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Gary police at (219) 881-1210 and ask for Detective James Nielsen.
