CROWN POINT | A Gary man on Wednesday was sentenced to 40 years in prison for his roles in a homicide and a separate shooting that wounded one person.

Marvel Harper, 22, pleaded guilty to charges of attempted robbery and aggravated battery in connection with the two crimes in Hammond.

A plea agreement called for Harper to serve concurrent 40-year and 15-year sentences on the charges.

In the first case, Harper admitted going to the area of Alice Avenue and Carroll Street with two co-defendants to rob 32-year-old David Alexander Jr.

Alexander was shot and killed by one of the co-defendants.

Harper also admitted he and two co-defendants fired into a group of people near Monroe and Kenwood streets two days earlier, striking a man walking in the area.
