GARY | A 39-year-old Gary man was shot multiple times outside his home Wednesday night and died later at a local hospital, marking the 35th homicide in the city this year.
Perry Johnson, of the 200 block of Cleveland Street, was pronounced dead just after 10 p.m. at Methodist Hospitals Northlake Campus in Gary, a statement from the Lake County coroner's office said.
The cause of death was listed as gunshot wounds suffered in an apparent homicide.
Gary police Lt. Del Stout said officers were called to a report of shots fired in 200 block of Cleveland Street and found Johnson outside with multiple gunshot wounds to his abdomen and leg.
Stout said investigators have no information on a motive and no suspects in custody but are following up on leads.
Johnson was not well known to police, having only a handful of minor infractions in the past, Stout said.
Police are asking anyone with information about the case to call Detective Lorenzo Davis at (219) 881-1210.
Johnson's death marks the 35th homicide of 2013. At this time last year, Gary has 26 homicides and did not reach the 35th until Nov. 19, Stout said.
Gary officials are working with local, county, state and federal officials on efforts to curb the violence.
