CROWN POINT | A Gary man admitted Wednesday to fatally shooting a 46-year-old man in 2010 during a fight, according to court records.
Steven L. Walker, 39, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter, a Class A felony, in the death of George L. Lewis, according to court records. Lake County prosecutors are expected to dismiss the murder charge when he is sentenced July 18.
Walker is accused of approaching Lewis Oct. 1, 2010, in front of a house in the 2500 block of Maryland Street. According to court records, the two men began to fight.
After the fight was broken up, Walker told Lewis he would be back, police said. Walker returned to the scene with a rifle and shot Lewis, according to court records.
Lewis was shot in his head and leg, police said. He died at the scene.
Officials have not said what led to the fight.
Walker could face up to 35 years in prison as part of the plea agreement.
According to the Indiana Department of Correction, Walker was previously convicted and served time in prison on a charge of possession of a controlled substance.
