GARY | Gun violence in Gary continued Thursday after a 27-year-old man was shot to death and four others were injured in separate shootings.

Christopher L. Hughes, 27, of the 300 block of McKinley Street, was pronounced dead at 3:30 a.m., according to a spokeswoman for the Lake County coroner's office.

The cause of death was listed as multiple gunshot wounds suffered in an apparent homicide.

Officers were called at 2:15 a.m. to the 1900 block of Connecticut Street for a report of shots fired, Gary police Cpl. Gabrielle King said. When officers arrived, they found Hughes' lifeless body on the front steps of a home there.

Witnesses told police another man was shot and taken to a local hospital by a private vehicle.

At the hospital, the 24-year-old man told police he and Hughes were standing with a group of people in front of the home when someone pulled out a handgun and started shooting.

The man said he ran west toward Broadway while the shooter continued firing at him. He told police he knew he'd been shot but kept running.

When the man reached Broadway, he flagged down a driver, who stopped to help him. The driver drove away with the man in his vehicle while the shooter continued firing, striking the vehicle, police said.

The home in the 1900 block of Connecticut Street also was damaged by gunfire, police said.

In a separate shooting, three people were shot Thursday night in the 4500 block of Harrison Street, according to the Lake County Sheriff's Department.

Gary police said none of the gunshot wounds was fatal as of Thursday evening. The suspect ran about a block away near a Salvation Army. Police did not release further details about the shooting by press time.

A Sheriff's Department K-9 officer was sniffing around bushes on Harrison Street about a block away from where the shooting took place.

Lavoris Hogan, who lives a few houses down from where the shooting took place, said she didn't hear or see the shooting. She said she is concerned about the city's increasing gun violence.

"It's getting closer to home," she said.

Hughes' murder marks the 29th of the year and seventh in the past two weeks. In 2012, the city had a total of 43 homicides.

Gary officials have vowed to aggressively address the issue.
