CROWN POINT | A Gary man whose murder trial ended in a hung jury was set free Friday while waiting to be retried.
Jamal Lawshea, 26, is accused of fatally shooting Latarus Foster, 29, of Gary, last year in the 3300 block of Maryland Street in Gary.
Lake Criminal Court Judge Salvador Vasquez declared a mistrial last month in the case against Lawshea after jurors failed to reach a verdict.
Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Michael Woods told jurors Lawshea needed money and was seen by a female witness leaving the scene with a gun.
Defense lawyer Thomas Vanes said witnesses could not say who shot Foster and the gun was not recovered.
Calling the case a close call for the first jury, Vasquez granted Vanes' request to set bail at $50,000. A new trial was scheduled for March 10.
