CROWN POINT | A Gary man was sentenced Wednesday to 33 years in prison having pleaded guilty to using a pick ax to kill another man he found sleeping uninvited on his couch.
Before accepting a plea deal last month, Calvin Peacock, 32, had faced murder charges in the slaying of Kevin Sperry, of Gary. Sperry had slipped unannounced into Peacock's home in October 2009.
Peacock pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter under a plea deal in which he agreed to the 33-year sentence.
Peacock admitted to hitting Sperry in the head with a pick ax when the men got into an argument after Sperry was discovered in the home.
Prior to the slaying, Sperry had stolen and sold a shotgun belonging to Peacock, who valued the gun because it was a gift from his grandfather.
