GARY | A 43-year-old Gary man shot and killed his wife before turning the gun on himself in front of his 17-year-old stepdaughter Thursday morning, police said.
Frederick Smith, 43 and Alicia Smith, 37, of the 1000 block of Harrison Street in Gary were pronounced dead at their home just after 7 a.m., the Lake County Coroner's office said.
Alicia Smith's death was ruled a homicide and Frederick Smith's death was ruled a suicide.
Gary Police Cpl. Gabrielle King said officers were called to the Smith home around 6 a.m. and found a teen girl screaming in front of the home. The girl told police her mother and stepfather were arguing and she heard a gunshot, so she gathered her siblings, went to a neighbor's house and called police.
When she went back to the home, the girl said she found her mother, Alicia Smith, unresponsive and asked her stepfather, "What did you do?" King said Frederick Smith then shot himself in the head.
Police said the children are in the care of family members.
Alicia Smith's homicide marks the 41st in the city this year. In 2012, Gary logged 43 homicides. Police are working with local departments and Lake County sheriff's police on a regional approach to try to curb the violence.
