CROWN POINT | A Gary man faces charges of attempted murder after police said he shot the homeowner whose house he was robbing.

Gary police said they identified Jamie Lee Burgess, 31, by the cellphone he dropped as he rushed from the home he was burglarizing.

Burgess also faces various burglary charges.

On July 4, Burgess was robbing a home in the Glen Park neighborhood of jewelry, phones and a computer when the owner returned, court records show.

Burgess shot the man in the left lower leg and ran off, records state. The homeowner was taken to Methodist Hospitals Northlake Campus for treatment.

Burgess was not in police custody as of press time.

Glen Park residents whose homes have been burglarized in recent months while their power was cut off are encouraged to call Gary police at (219) 881-1214.
