GARY | Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson is featured in a video produced by Mayors Against Illegal Guns demanding stronger gun regulations.
The mayors discuss in the video the distress of learning about gun violence in their cities, and urge people to press politicians for tighter gun laws. The video is 1 minute and 26 seconds and briefly shows Freeman-Wilson.
She said it was filmed in January at the Conference of Mayors in Washington, where mayors were asked to participate in the video. South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg also was is featured in the video.
Freeman-Wilson said gun violence hits close to home.
"We have a large number of violence that is handgun-related," she said. "We need to have every tool to address this issue."
Freeman-Wilson said urging Congress and the president to create stricter regulations for weapons is one aspect of Mayors Against Illegal Guns.
Locally, she said one part of increased gun control is to urge law enforcement to enforce regulations at events such as the Lake County gun shows.
"If you are at a gun show, you shouldn't be selling guns out of your trunk," she said.
The coalition of mayors also is looking at having cities cut ties with certain manufactures of weapons, she said.
The group was founded in 2006 by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, according to the group's website.
