GARY | Two young men were gunned down early Thursday in Gary, police said.

Police found Daven James, 17, of Gary, and another victim dead after responding at 1:30 a.m. to the 1600 block of West Fifth Avenue for reports of shots fired and a man down, authorities said.

James was pronounced dead at 2:30 a.m. from gunshot wounds suffered in a homicide, the Lake County coroner's office said.

The second victim has not yet been identified. His age was not known Thursday morning but he is believed to have been a juvenile as well, investigators said. He also died of multiple gunshot wounds suffered in a homicide.

There was a gathering at the location prior to the shootings, but it was unclear whether it may have been a domestic or gang-related shooting, Gary police Cpl. Gabrielle King said.

Police and coroner's office investigators were working to reach next of kin to help identify the second victim.

Police are asking anyone with information about the crimes to contact Cpl. James Neilsen at (219) 881-4754 or Detective Daryl Gordon at (219) 881-4750.
