GARY | Police have ruled the death of an unidentified man whose body was pulled out of a burning garage Sunday a homicide after an autopsy revealed he was shot to death.

Officers responded to a call of a fire in the 500 block of Taft Street about 7 p.m. and found the garage fully engulfed in flames, according to reports.

Police said firefighters eventually were able to locate and remove the body of a man that was inside the garage.

The Lake County coroner’s office conducted an autopsy and determined the man died as a result of a gunshot wound. The victim’s identity has yet to be released, police spokeswoman Cpl. Gabrielle King said.

Police have asked anyone with information about the death to call Detective Lorenzo Davis at (219) 881-4738.
