GARY | Police officers issued 122 traffic citations Friday as part of a large traffic blitz within the city.
Gary Police Chief Wade Ingram coordinated a traffic blitz from 3 to 7 p.m. with the Gary Police Department, the Lake County Sheriff's Department and the Indiana State Police.
Officers also towed 11 vehicles, issued 12 warning citations, made six arrests and confiscated three firearms.
The blitz comes in response to a high number of traffic fatalities in the city. More than five were reported over the course of three weeks.
"We will periodically conduct traffic blitzes to ensure the safety of the residents and motorists in the city of Gary," Gary police spokeswoman Gabrielle King said.
