GARY | Cheryl Pruit, superintendent of the Gary Community School Corp., extended a public apology Wednesday to students and parents  because of several problems regarding the district's bus system.

The number of buses in the system has been reduced from 100 to 60, resulting in routes that have been changed and some confusion, school officials said.

The district is asking more students to walk to school, including high school and middle school students who live within two miles of their facilities. Elementary students living within one mile of school also are considered to be in the "walk zone."

Also, Pruitt said a former employee had gone into the system and changed bus routes without the knowledge of administrators, creating more confusion.

Pruitt said she hopes all problems will be resolved by Friday.
