GARY | The Barden Gary Foundation announced students and their senior community service projects Tuesday evening at the common council meeting.
Foundation president Chareice White said 165 students have been enrolled in the program and a total of $341,000 in scholarships has been given to Gary high school seniors over the past several years since the foundation was established.
This year, 17 students are enrolled in the BGF program: Tacarra Holden and Denisha Golston from Lew Wallace; Laurielle McFerson from West Side; Brytnie Jones, Danielle Nichols, Kimberly Niksch, Maggie Mooers, Jaelan Collins, Tamara Lofton, Janel Scissom, Alec Lee, Brianna Nichols and Andrea Mathews from Wirt-Emerson; Teneia Martin and Marcus Lloyd from Thea Bowman Leadership Academy; Jarell Springfield from Calumet High School and Bradley Cochran from Roosevelt.
The foundation partnered with Project Close-Up, a program that works with educators, schools and youth organizations throughout the country to help young people develop the skills and attitudes to become informed and engaged citizens. The BGF students will be attending President Barack Obama’s inauguration and will participate in workshops and meet members of Congress and the media.
The Barden Foundation Ambassadors — Holden, Golston, McFerson, Jones, Martin, Lloyd and Springfield — have created senior community service projects. From teaching discipline through karate to an initiative that helps maintain and develop healthy eating habits to prevent obesity in teens, these students are busy trying to help out in the Gary community, White said.
