GARY | A Monday afternoon chase of a man wanted on warrant in two counties led to a standoff with Gary SWAT teams and a crash involving an Indiana University Northwest squad car that sent an officer to the hospital.

According to Cpl. Gabrielle King, at 1:07 p.m. a Gary police officer and an IUN police officer were in a squad car at the intersection of Washington Street and 43rd Avenue when a tan SUV traveling east on 43rd approached them.

Officers recognized the front seat passenger as Antonio Dove, 27, of Gary, and noticed he was not wearing a seat belt.

Dove was wanted on active warrants from Jasper and Lake counties on charges of failure to appear in cases involving allegations of theft,  possessing a gun without a license and refusal to provide information.

Officers activated the lights and sirens on the squad and attempted to pull the vehicle over. Police said the driver pulled over at 44th Avenue and Adams Street. King said Dove got out of the car and ran northwest on foot between homes there.

IUN Officer Michael Trueblood was responding to the incident when he was involved in a head-on collision near the intersection of Ridge Road and Van Buren Street.

IUN officials said Monday that Trueblood was transported to the Methodist Hospitals Northlake Campus for treatment. King said Tuesday his injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.

The driver of the other vehicle also was injured and transported to Methodist, officials said.

Officers chased Dove then activated the SWAT team, setting up a perimeter around a home in the 300 block of West 43rd Avenue after ordering all occupants out of the residence.

King said a bystander told police they would call Dove and have him leave the home. Dove left without incident about 30 minutes after the standoff began.

Dove was transported to Lake County Jail on the outstanding warrants. He also was charged with a seat belt infraction, King said.
