CROWN POINT | Lake County prosecutors charged a Gary teen Friday with murder in connection with one of the shootings earlier this week in Hammond.
Aqueeli Walton, 17, was charged as an adult in Lake Criminal Court. He's accused of killing Cameron Sanders, 18, on Monday.
Walton remained at large Friday afternoon, police said.
The homicide was one of three shootings in Hammond this week that prompted police to request assistance from the Northwest Indiana Major Crimes Task Force.
The investigation has not yet established a link among the three shootings, but police said Friday the investigation continues.
Witnesses told police Walton was observed fleeing from a residence in the 4400 block of Sherman Street in Hammond, according to a probable cause affidavit.
Sanders was found inside with multiple gunshot wounds. Sanders allegedly had argued with and fired a gun at his girlfriend, a sister of Walton, earlier in the day, court records state.
Witnesses told police Sanders and Walton were heard arguing about Sanders' alleged attack on Walton's sister before gunshots rang out, according to court records.
Sanders had nine bullet wounds, including on both sides of his chest, abdomen, right leg, both elbows and ankle, authorities said.
He was taken to Franciscan St. Margaret Health hospital, where he died from his wounds, the affidavit states.
