GARY | A 16-year-old Gary girl was charged with two counts of child neglect after her 2-year-old and 6-month-old were found alone in a house Wednesday night, police said.
Police were called to a disturbance at 8:12 p.m. in the 4400 block of Jefferson Street. The caller said a child could be heard crying in the house but there was no adult around, Gary police Cpl. Gabrielle King said.
Officers arrived to find blood on the door of the home, police said. They heard a baby crying and a dog barking, but no one answered the door. Through a window, one officer saw two children, King said.
The Gary Fire Department was called to help force entry to the house. Officers entered and searched the home, finding blood in the front room and a strong smell of bleach, police said. The children were placed in an ambulance until Child Protective Services arrived, King said.
More than a half-hour later, the 16-year-old approached the house and told police she lived there with her children. At first, she said she left them there with their father, but then she said she fought with the father and left the home to clear her head, King said.
The woman had a cut on her hand, which was treated at the scene.
