GARY | A Gary man was shot and killed there early Monday, bringing the city's homicides for 2013 to 43.
Gary logged 43 homicides for the calendar year in 2012.
Gary police were called to the Blue Room Lounge, 224 E. 16th Ave., just after 1 a.m. for multiple reports of shots fired outside the tavern.
Jerome Williams, 35, of the 2600 block of Harrison St. in Gary, was pronounced dead nearby in the 500 block of E. 16th Ave., the Lake County coroner's office reported.
The cause of death was listed on the coroner's office report as multiple gunshot wounds to the body suffered in a homicide. He was pronounced dead at 2:22 a.m.
Gary law enforcement and elected officials are working on a regional approach to curbing homicides in the city.
A team of investigators from Hammond, East Chicago, Gary and the Lake County Sheriff's Department dubbed the Region STOP Team have partnered to patrol northern Lake County cities to stop the violence before it starts.
