WESTVILLE | A Gary woman was arrested and charged with trafficking Monday while visiting an inmate at the Westville Correctional Facility, officials there said Wednesday.
Leona Williams was visiting Marshall Brown, 22, of Gary, and while being searched, officers found she was carrying a package.
John Schrader, public information officer for the facility, said details on the contents of the package are not being released at the request of the LaPorte County prosecutor's office.
Williams was arrested and transported to the LaPorte County Jail.
Brown is serving a five-year sentence for carrying a handgun without a permit. His projected release date was Oct. 21. Officials said he was placed in segregation at the facility after Williams' arrest.
"While the vast majority of visitors are here simply to maintain contact with their family and loved ones, we always have to be alert for those whose intentions are more devious," Superintendent Mark Levenhagen said in a statement issued early Wednesday.
Indiana Department of Correction Commissioner Bruce Lemmon commended the facility's staff, "for the thoroughness and diligence they apply to their duties and responsibilities."
"We have the responsibility of protecting not only the public, but also those living and working inside our facilities."
