CROWN POINT | Eight felony counts, including two Class A charges of neglect of a dependent and battery, were filed Thursday against a Gary woman in the death of her then-5-month-old child.
Siarra Morgan, 19, is accused of putting her son, Syrus Morgan, in a situation that endangered his life or health that resulted in death, and of battery in the manner of his injuries.
The probable cause affidavit states the injuries happened between Aug. 7 and Oct. 22 in the woman’s home in the 4700 block of East 10th Avenue. She shared the home with her boyfriend.
Gary police officers were called Oct. 22 to Methodist Hospitals Northlake Campus in Gary for a reported child abuse incident, the court documents indicate. The child suffered severe head injuries and was on life support after Gary Fire Department paramedics tried performing CPR, according to the affidavit.
Morgan’s boyfriend told officials the child had fallen from the bed just 15 minutes before paramedics were called, the court documents state.
Syrus was transported Oct. 22 to University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital on life support. He was taken off life support and pronounced dead Oct. 25, the records state.
Detectives discovered the child also had been brought to Methodist Hospital on Aug. 7 for a “bleed to the brain, which was also reported as the result of a fall off a bed,” according to the probable cause affidavit.
An autopsy performed by the Cook County medical examiner’s office indicated the child died from multiple injuries due to child abuse and that the manner of death was a homicide.
Morgan is being held in the Gary City Jail on $100,000 bail.
