GARY | A Hobart man was killed early Friday after driving his pickup truck the wrong way on the Borman Expressway and hitting a semi head-on.
Timothy J. Leib, 35, of the 2900 block of Union Street in Hobart, was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:55 a.m., according to the Lake County coroner's office. The cause of death was listed as blunt force trauma suffered in a motor vehicle accident.
Alcohol may have been a factor in the crash, and toxicology tests are pending, Indiana State Police said.
A trooper responded at 1:30 a.m. to the crash on Interstate 94 about two miles east of the Broadway exit. According to police, Leib was driving a black Honda Ridgeline pickup truck when he entered the eastbound lanes at an unknown location, traveling west.
A red 2011 Freightliner pulling a box trailer was in the right center lane of the four-lane expressway when a semi in front of it suddenly swerved. The Maryland man who was driving the Freightliner then hit Leib's truck head-on.
The driver of the semi was not injured in the crash.
The Freightliner, owned by Crete Carrier Corp., of Lincoln, Neb., was loaded with 41,000 pounds of food en route to Pennsylvania. The load was not lost in the crash.
The two left lanes were closed until 4:30 a.m.
