GARY | A Gary water department employee discovered a human skull Thursday in the area of 27th Avenue and Maryland Street, police said.
Police spokeswoman Gabrielle King said the worker was checking on a water leak when he found the skull at 5:16 p.m.
"The coroner was called to the scene," King said. "He made the decision to contact Dr. Steve Nawrocki," a forensic specialist from Indianapolis.
Stephen Nawrocki, a forensic anthropologist and professor of biology and anthropology at the University of Indianapolis, along with a team of four graduate students, recently supervised the exhumation of remains discovered in Hammond.
King said the scene will be secured until Saturday, when Nawrocki is expected to arrive to continue the investigation.
